With three scrimmages and two regular season games behind them, the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base basketball team is already hot into its 2018-19 season.

The team’s next home game is Nov. 30 against the Dayton Airstrikes, a local area semiprofessional basketball team. The game will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Wright Field Fitness Center in Area B.

Last year, the team finished with a 31-7 overall record, which resulted in a ranking of fifth in the country, according to military team rankings.

Byron Brandon, an Air Force retiree and management analyst with the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s Presidential and Executive Airlift directorate, is coaching the team for the 18th year and has high hopes for this year’s squad.

“We’re pretty talented and should do as well, if not better, than last season,” said Brandon.

In the 2017-18 season, his team won its end-of-year basketball tournament, the Capital City Classic in Washington, D.C.

The team plays smaller local colleges and universities within Ohio. Despite Brandon’s players being a little older than their college competition, his teams have historically matched up well with their size and speed.

The Air Force maintains intramural sports programs on its bases to promote morale, welfare and recreation within the ranks of its Air Force communities. Players that are exceptional on the intramural teams often end up playing for their respective base teams.
