2 area teams No. 1 in 1st state football poll

The Coldwater and Marion Local high school football programs have more in common than being longtime Midwest Athletic Conference rivals: Both are divisional leaders in the first weekly Association Press polls.

Coldwater (3-0) was tops in Division V and drew five first-place votes. Runner-up Youngstown Ursuline drew more first-place votes – seven – but totaled 18 less total points. Defending D-V state champ Kirtland was third.

Marion Local (3-0) was the D-VI leader by a large margin over runner-up Mogadore. The Flyers drew 15 first-place votes, which matched D-I leader Cleveland St. Ignatius for most in any division.

Coldwater and Marion Local are also No. 1 in their respective divisions in the Prep Football Power Rankings.

The MAC also was represented in the D-VI poll by Delphos St. John’s (No. 3) and Minster (No. 6). Marion Local is the defending D-VI state champion.

The only other area team that made a legitimate threat for a top spot was Thurgood Marshall of the Dayton City League. The Cougars (3-0) were selected No. 2 in D-III and trailed top-ranked Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary by just 13 points.

Alter (2-0-1) also cracked D-III’s best, ranking No. 5. Athletic Director Chris Hart reported that the Knights’ game with visiting Napoleon this past weekend was suspended because of lightning. Both teams decided not to resume the contest.

According to Ohio High School Athletic Association rules, the result is a tie.

Trotwood-Madison, the D-II defending state champion, is just 1-2 and coming off a 21-14 setback to Wayne. However, the Rams drew a couple of first-place votes and rank No. 6, far behind lead Toledo Central Catholic.

No area team was among the state’s top 10 in D-I or D-IV.

The ratings are voted on by sports writers and broadcasters throughout the state. The weekly polls will continue through the end of the regular season.
