Double overtime wasn’t long enough to decide that game, eventually won by Badin 1-0 on penalty kicks.
This one had a bit less drama as Indians senior midfielder Olivia Brown scored a goal in the 34th minute, while the stout CCD defense allowed three shots on goal, as Country Day held on for a 1-0 win over Badin.
The Indians face Madeira for the regional championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. Madeira beat Summit Country Day 1-0 on Tuesday.
“They have a legitimate shot at winning the state championship,” Badin coach Todd Berkely said of CCD.
Would CCD winning the state title make this loss easier to take?
“I’d rather win it myself,” he said.
The Indians (17-1-2), ranked No. 2 in the final state poll, entered the game with 12 shutouts, 11 of them wins, and had allowed a total of six goals. They had won their last four games by shutout and hadn’t lost since being edged 1-0 by McNicholas in their season opener.
CCD’s offense piled up eight corner kicks in the second half and 13 in the game while squeezing 10 shots on goal. Badin finished with zero corner kicks in a game that got physical enough in the second half for the referee to hand out a yellow card.
“That was brutal,” Berkely said. “That was two good teams going after each other. Games like this usually come down to one play. I didn’t think we got the breaks that we earned. We needed one more connected piece.”
Badin (11-7-1), which lost 1-0 to CCD early in the regular season, had won four straight matches and five of six wrapped around a 0-0 tie with Roger Bacon. The Rams had one loss in their last eight matches.
“That goal in the first game was scored off a mistake,” Berkely said. “The goal tonight was scored off a mistake.”
CCD took a 1-0 lead on Brown’s goal off a corner kick and rebound with 6:36 left in the first half. Senior defender Deidre Mohan unleashed a 25-yard shot that Badin senior goalkeeper Abby Lampe blocked but couldn’t corral, and Brown was there to nudge it in for the Indians.
Lampe and the Badin defense turned away several more first-half threats, including a save in which the senior knocked a shot up in the air and then caught as she was landing on her back at the goal line. CCD’s pleas for the official on the sideline to award a goal left him shaking his head.
“The girls had their heads up at halftime,” Berkely said. “They had their heads in the game.”
Lampe also dove to her left to make a save on a 15-yard shot in the 47th minute.
“Our goalkeeping again was outstanding,” Berkely said. “Even the (CCD) coaches commented on it.”
