Q: When did Joe Meyer play for the Cincinnati Reds and how good was he? — Thomas, Union
A: If somebody named Joe Meyer is telling you he played for the Reds, you best tell him to change his first name to Russ. The only Meyer ever to play for the Reds was pitcher Russ Meyer and his career lasted one inning in Cincinnati in 1956 (no runs, one hit). He did pitch 12 years in the majors and won 17 games for the 1949 Philadelphia Phillies. Joe? No go.
Q: What purpose does it serve hitters to have the cupped indentations in the top of their bats as opposed to a smooth top? — Bill, Dayton
A: They could store their chewing tobacco or gum in there while they hit. Mostly, I'm told, it is cosmetics. Some players think it looks good. Other say by digging that cup out of the tops of their bats it takes one or two ounces off the weight without reducing the size of the sweet spot on the barrel.
