Promising forward signs with Raiders

The final piece of the puzzle for the Wright State men’s basketball team fell into place Friday with the signing of Jerran Young, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward from McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas.

Young verbally committed to the Raiders in April but had to finish and pass classes this summer before he enrolled at Wright State. He arrived on campus this week.

Young, a graduate of Cedar Hill High School in Texas, played two seasons at McLennan. He originally committed to Nebraska last year but was released from that commitment because of a coaching change.

“It’s really good for us because he’s a player who can defend five positions,” Wright State coach Billy Donlon said. “Can you have him guard the other team’s point guard or the other team’s center for extended periods of time? No. But where it comes into play, in the last 10 seconds, he can switch the ball screen, guard the center for those 10 seconds, block him out and get the rebound, or if he’s guarding the other team’s power forward, he can switch the ball screen in those last 10 seconds and guard the point guard and do a good job of it.

“You can’t really put a price tag on that.”

Young played on a state championship runner-up team in 2009 at Cedar Hill and was named district defensive player of the year. He averaged 10 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists as a senior in high school. As a freshman at McLennan, he averaged 10.5 points and 1.5 steals. Last season, he averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds.

“Offensively, he’s got an excellent first step,” Donlon said. “He’s a slasher. I think he’s going to be an excellent offensive rebounder. We’ve got to let him loose with that so he can get some putbacks and get some easy baskets.”

With the addition of Young, six of the 13 players on Wright State’s roster will be new.

“He’s definitely going to play. Whether he starts or not, I don’t have any idea,” Donlon said. “The thing I’m most excited about — and I said it to our team — is last year we had one or two positions where we had only one guy or maybe two guys at that position. This year we have three guys at every spot except for center. So competition for playing time will be fierce.”
