The Bengals on Friday released four players, including veteran running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Green-Ellis led the Bengals in rushing the last two seasons. He joined the Bengals in 2012 from New England.

“It’s very difficult to release such a fine player and person as BenJarvus,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a release.“He has been an exceptional player and teammate, as well as mentor to our younger players. He has also been a standout person in the community. We thank Bennie for all he has done and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

The Bengals drafted running back Jeremy Hill in the second round. The former LSU standout had a big game Thursday night (90 yards rushing) vs. Indianapolis and has had a strong preseason overall. Hill is expected to be one of four running backs to make the 53-man roster. Starter Gio Bernard and backups Cedric Peerman and Rex Burkhead are the others.

Also on Friday, the Bengals waived linebacker Brandon Joiner, quarterback Tyler Wilson and defensive tackle LaKendrick Ross.

NFL teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by 4 p.m. Saturday.
