Fleck was recognized Wednesday as the recipient of the Gordon Teigen Meritorious Service Award by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association. The annual award recognizes an individual for outstanding service to collegiate bowling and is voted on by all current NCBCA members.
“To win an award for something you love to do that is voted on by your peers at a national level is a very special honor,” Fleck said. “While this is an individual award, it truly speaks to the success of the whole Wright State bowling community. Nothing like this would be possible without the support of our extended family – I am truly grateful and humbled by this award.”
The NCBCA wasn’t the only organization that recognized Fleck’s contributions as the Raiders coach was recently recognized as the 2020 Advisor of the Year by the Wright State University Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. The award is given to a recognized student organization advisor who goes above and beyond the minimum requirements of an advisor – a role model and source of support for students. It was the Fleck’s first time being nominated for the university-wide award.
“I was truly honored to simply have someone at the university reach out to me and let me know that I was nominated,” Fleck said. “When they were doing the Zoom meeting and got to the Advisor of the Year, they started reading the accomplishments and I started crying because I knew it was me. Our program has been through a lot over the years so it is truly an honor to be recognized by the university.”
•NCBCA All-Americans: Local collegiate bowlers earned honorable mention All-American honors Wednesday from the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association.
Jessica Wolfe capped her senior season at the University of Pikeville with the unexpected NCBCA recognition.
“I wasn’t expecting to get anything, so it was really cool,” Wolfe said.
The Bears senior and Fairmont graduate, averaged 197.9, won the Indy Classic and had four Top 5 finishes, but struggled a bit with confidence this season.
“I had such a good junior season, I put a lot of pressure on myself this year,” she said.
But 2019-20 marked a new season and a new Jessica Wolfe – down 94 pounds in the past year. She also went down four grip sizes during the course of the season.
“Physically, I feel better than I have in a long time and I have so much more energy, and that’s what matters.”
•Butler bowling alum and Lindenwood University freshman Drew Sacks posted a 210.364 average, third highest among all rookies and 17th in the nation overall. Sacks won the Striking Knights Invitational in Louisville – edging out National Player of the year Tom Hankey by 11 pins – and had three other Top 10 finishes including second place at both the Leatherneck Classic in Iowa and the Cincinnati Classic.
•Wright State University sophomore Maddie Stiffler added another award to her solid 2019-20 season resume. Stiffler was recognized as the women’s Player of the Year by the Club Team Bowling Coaches Association a week earlier. She led all club women with a 194.7 average, winning one tournament – a Tier 1 event – and placing in the top five four times and Top 10 nine times this season.
