Central State University named Tara Owens its new director of athletics on Friday. She replaces Jahan Culbreath, who was promoted to AD in 2012 and is now the vice president of institutional advancement and athletics.

"Central State University is delighted to welcome Ms. Tara A. Owens to Central State University," said Central State President Cynthia Jackson-Hammond. “Ms. Owens has an impeccable record of engagement and service in intercollegiate athletics and will provide strong administrative support to all of our sports. We look forward to our student-athletes continuing to flourish academically and athletically under her direction.”

Earlier in her career, Owens coached the women’s basketball teams at Norfolk State University (2007-09) and Elizabeth City State University (2005-07).

Owens graduated from Virginia State University in 1993 and played basketball at the school from 1988-91.
