St. Henry senior Mikesell commits to UD

St. Henry High School senior Ryan Mikesell comes from a family of Dayton grads. Two of his uncles graduated from UD, and he calls them “UD nuts.” Another uncle has season tickets.

Mikesell also grew up knowing the name Kurt Huelsman, a St. Henry star who played at UD from 2006-10. Mikesell himself has been going to games at UD Arena as long as he can remember.

It wasn’t a hard choice for the 6-foot-7 forward to pick the Flyers. He verbally committed to the men’s basketball program Thursday, joining Xeyrius Williams, of Wayne, in a so-far locally-dominated class of 2015. Both are playing for All-Ohio Black, an AAU team, this summer.

Mikesell said playing close to home was definitely important.

“That means a lot to my family and myself that they can come and watch most of the games,” Mikesell said. “I thought it was the perfect fit for myself. It’s a great school obviously and a great basketball community, and they get tons of community support.”
