“He’s a big body,” Miami coach John Cooper said. “You look at the stat sheet, and he’s got 18 and 11. He’s like a stat machine.”
Coach Billy Donlon believes Yoho is capable of more.
“Overall, J.T. was good, but I think he can be a lot better,’ Donlon said. “That’s the sign of a good player – when he goes for 18 and 11 and his coach doesn’t think he brought his ‘A’ game.”
Yoho posted his first double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as a freshman on Feb. 23, 2013, against Evansville. He was especially pleased on Sunday to do so against a local rival while gaining some revenge for Miami’s 59-56 win over the Raiders last season at Oxford.
“It’s always good to beat Miami,” Yoho said. “We went there last year and there were like 200 people in the stands, and it was a sloppy game. It’s always good to beat a rival, especially at home.”
Hot Streak: Freshman guard Grant Benzinger went 4 for 4, including three 3-pointers, to score 11 points during a 15-0 run that gave Wright State a 17-5 lead with 11:08 left in the first half.
That also was his final stat line – 4 for 4, including 3 for 3 on 3-pointers, and 11 points.
“It was real important to get out to a quick jump,” the 6-3 Cincinnati Moeller graduate said. “It made the rest of the game easier.”
Well, except when Miami kept mounting second-half comebacks that Wright State successfully held off.
“Every team goes on runs,” Yoho said. “It was important to stay focused and calm.”
WSU women roll: Senior guard Courtney Boyd scored a season-high 14 points and senior forward Taylor Stanton finished with her third double-double of the season as Wright State snapped a two-game losing streak by rolling to its biggest win of the season, an 82-61 romp over Lamar in the opener of Sunday's doubleheader.
The 6-foot Stanton tied her career high with 17 points and hauled in 14 rebounds for the Raiders, who lost their first two games of the month after completing a 4-0 start with a 70-50 win over Southern Illinois on November 22.
Senior forward Breanna Stucke finished with 13 points and senior guard Tay’ler Mingle came off the bench to add 10 for Wright State (4-2), which outrebounded Lamar (2-7), 43-34, leading to a 19-7 advantage in second-chance points.
Wright State led by as many as 28 points midway through the second half. The Raiders return to action today with a 7 p.m. non-conference home game agnst Otterbein. Admission is free.
Notes: Miami's 16 first-half points were the fewest allowed by Wright State in any half this season. The previous low was 21 by Florida International in the second half of FIU's 61-59 win on November 28. The previous first-half low was 27 by Bowling Green in the Falcons' 70-55 win on November 19. … The Raiders have won three straight games for the first time this season. … Junior center Michael Karena finished with 10 points after scoring a season-high 12 on Thursday in Wright State's 79-71 win at Belmont. Those are the first back-to-back double-figure scoring efforts of the season for the 6-1- New Zealand native.
