Here are 5 things to know about the game:
The series
The home team has won the last five meetings. San Diego had to score 13 points in the last 4:31 last season to pull out a 12-point win. The Flyers and Toreros have combined to win 20 PFL championships.
The quarterback
Kyle Kaparos will make his fifth straight start for the Flyers. Fifth-year senior Alex Jeske has been practicing in pads, but coach Rick Chamberlin says the veteran quarterback still isn’t fully recovered from a broken bone in his foot last summer.
“I think Kyle has made good progress throughout these first four games,” Chamberlin said. “This past Saturday at Morehead we did not lose that game because of Kyle Kaparos — in fact I saw another dimension of Kyle with his running ability.”
The running back
Tucker Yinger is racking up some yards in his first healthy season with the Flyers. The junior from Columbus has rushed for 429 yards in four games.
“Right now I’m getting a bit more of the load with Alex gone,” Yinger said. “I just try to do the same thing I’ve always done and try to make plays for the team and get in the end zone.”
The receiver
A year ago Jack Euritt was one of the go-to guys for the Flyers, hauling in a team-high seven touchdown catches. So far this season the fifth-year senior has been nearly invisible.
Euritt caught his first pass of the season in last week’s loss at Morehead.
“We’re getting used to having a new quarterback,” Euritt said. “Whenever the ball comes your way there’s always pressure to make a play so we’re just looking for those opportunities and we’ll do whatever we can to make them.”
Looking back
The Flyers will honor the 2007 PFL championship team on Alumni Day. Chamberlin admits he’s told his team something about that team that could mirror this year’s edition.
The 2007 team went on the road in Week 5 and lost at Morehead State before running off six wins in a row, including a win at home against San Diego.
“Every week we feel is a playoff game for us,” Chamberlin said. “It’s double elimination, so we’re still in the game.”
