Nelson, who was 46 years old, was a three-year starter at safety and one of four captains on the 1993 Ohio State team that went 10-1-1 and finished 10/11 in the coaches and AP polls at the end of the season. He was named All Big Ten on a team that was co-Big Ten champion and beat BYU in the Holiday Bowl. He was recruited out of Sarasota, Florida by head coach John Cooper.
Former Ohio State running back, Heisman trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer Eddie George mentioned Nelson as one of the players that forged him during his hall of fame inductin speech. Nelson finished his career with 198 tackles, 11 pass break ups and seven interceptions.
Nelson's death was noted on Twitter by several of his former teammates.
