If Bosa can play 60 to 65 snaps per game, defensive line coach Larry Johnson said, that would allow Bosa to play his best.
“With Jalyn Holmes and Sam Hubbard and Darius Slade, it gives us a chance to really rotate and keep those guys fresh with (the other defensive end starter) Tyquan Lewis,” Johnson said. “That’s the way you’ve got to play the game. It gives Joey a chance to be fast all the time.
“A year ago, he probably played 72 plays (per game), down from 90 the year before I got there. Some games he played 85, 90 plays, which is a lot of football. To play at maximum speed, I think that’s tough to do.”
Bosa had two tackles in his first game back from suspension. He recorded a sack, but it was nullified by a penalty.
“The thing with Joey is because he has such a great skill set, he’s got to play at the high level all the time,” Johnson said. “That’s tough to do sometimes. That expectation comes with a little stress. The biggest thing is keeping Joey relaxed and just playing within himself.
Quarterback situation: Cardale Jones has started both games and will continue to start, Meyer said. Neither he or J.T. Barrett played well against Hawaii, combining to compete 20 of 34 passes for 181 yards with no touchdowns.
“Both of them get reps,” Meyer said. “Both of them will continue to get reps. The approach I’ve taken is Cardale started. He’s the starting quarterback. I met with him yesterday. J.T. has not beat him out yet. He’s going to continue to have opportunities to do that because J.T. is a very good player and Cardale’s got to perform.”
Players honored: Meyer gave champion grades to the following players for their performances Saturday: cornerbacks Eli Apple and Gareon Conley; safety Tyvis Powell, linebackers Raekwon McMillan and Joshua Perry; defensive end Tyquan Lewis; hybrid back Curtis Samuel; and running back Ezekiel Elliott.
Safety Vonn Bell and linebacker Darron Lee were the co-players of the game. Terry McLaurin and Conley were the co-special teams players of the week.
Looking ahead: The Big Ten announced the game time for Ohio State's home game against Western Michigan on Sept. 26. It will be played at 3:30 p.m. and televised on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.
The game time for the Oct. 3 game at Indiana has not been announced.
