Camper signs deal with NHL’s Bruins

OXFORD — After four years of leading Miami University hockey to new heights, Carter Camper’s career also is soaring.

The RedHawks senior forward has agreed to terms with the NHL’s Boston Bruins organization and will begin his professional career this weekend with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.

“I’m flying out to Providence (R.I.) right now,” Camper, 22, confirmed early Tuesday evening. “The contract’s in place. I’m flying out to sign it tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.”

Camper, an undrafted free agent, finished his Miami career as the school’s No. 2 all-time scorer with 183 points and was among the 10 Hobey Baker Award finalists this season.

“I’ve been talking to teams since the season ended,” Camper said. “It all happened pretty quick.

“I’m extremely excited,” he added. “It’s a dream come true to be a part of the Bruins organization.”

Providence is Boston’s primary development team and plays its final three games of the regular season Friday through Sunday.

“Then I’ll be returning to Miami,” said Camper, adding that he will attend the Boston Bruins’ rookie camp this summer “and I’ll compete for a job.”

Camper, of Rocky River, said the prospect of playing pro hockey “had seemed so far down the road” when he first arrived in Oxford.

“As the seasons went on, I was hoping for an opportunity to take the next step,” he said. “It’s hard to believe right now.”

Camper recorded at least 40 points in all four of his seasons at Miami. During those years, the RedHawks made their first NCAA Frozen Four appearance, played in their first NCAA championship game and won their first Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament title.

As a senior, Camper ranked fourth in the nation with 57 points, made the All-CCHA first team and was named CCHA Scholar Athlete of the Year.
