BGSU nips Miami in baseball 7-6

BOWLING GREEN — Bowling Green held off the Miami University RedHawks late for a 7-6 baseball win Saturday, May 1, at Steller Field. The Falcons (21-18-1, 11-6 Mid-American Conference) have now won 11 straight games, including a defeat of Miami (20-22, 7-10 MAC) in Friday’s series opener.

The RedHawks, who stranded 11 runners on base, were out-hit 13-10 but received strong production from junior center fielder Adam Eaton (Springfield), who went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles, two walks, two stolen bases and three runs scored.

Falcon senior and Hamilton High School grad Tyler Elkins started at first base for BGSU. He collected a single in five at-bats and was involved in seven putouts at first.

The two sides wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m. at Bowling Green’s Steller Field.

Miami softball falls in extra innings

DEKALB, Ill. – The Miami RedHawks dropped a tough 10-inning decision to Northern Illinois 3-2 on Saturday.

Meghan Mawn was the RedHawks’ leading hitter, going 3-for-5 with one RBI. Kathryn Russette was 1-for-4 with one RBI. Meredith Linch finished with 6 1/3 innings pitched, giving up two earned runs on four hits. She struck out three.

Miami (25-21, 10-7 in the Mid-American Conference) and Northern Illinois (21-30, 9-8 MAC) will conclude their weekend series at 2 p.m. today.

RedHawk netters advance to final

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Top-seeded Miami University was pushed to the brink by No. 5 Buffalo in its Mid-American Conference semifinal Saturday afternoon, but escaped with a 4-1 victory at Western Michigan’s Sorensen Courts.

Sophomore Stephanie Danesis saved the day with a three-set victory at No. 2 for the deciding point.

Miami will look to defend its 2009 championship at noon today against third-seeded and host Western Michigan, a 4-3 winner over Akron.

Harrison wins seniors national judo title

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Kayla Harrison, 19, threw Katinna Rodriguez of Anchorage, Alaska, for ippon in the 78kg division final, during the USA Judo Senior Nationals and World Team Trials on Saturday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Harrison, a Middletown native who trains in Wakefield, Mass., qualified for her second Senior World team with the win.

Cyclones fall to Reading Royals

CINCINNATI — The Reading Royals scored a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Cylcones on Saturday, May 1, at U.S. Bank Arena to take a 2-0 lead in the ECHL Eastern Conference finals.

Matt Dalton made 45 saves for Reading.

The Cyclones outshot the Royals 46-17, including 27-7 in the final two periods.
