Miami Insider: Three players leading Miami’s offense

The Miami University baseball team has a winning record and a big home game against Ohio State tonight at McKie Field.

The RedHawks, coming off 5-3 and 11-3 victories over Toledo last weekend, are 15-12 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference.

Freshman outfielder Matt Honchel is swinging the hottest bat, leading the squad with a .436 average. The Harrodsburg, Ky., native has three doubles, a triple, 11 RBIs and eight stolen bases.

MU’s top three run producers are junior first baseman Kevin Bower (28 RBIs), sophomore catcher John Crummy (24) and redshirt senior outfielder Bryce Redeker (19), who has eight doubles, a triple and three home runs.

Sophomore right-hander Charles Zubrod (1-2, 2.28 ERA), redshirt senior southpaw Shawn Marquardt (3-3, 3.56), and junior right-handers Brooks Fiala (2-3, 5.97) and Mac Thoreson (3-2, 6.57) have combined for all but three of the RedHawks’ starts on the mound.

Redshirt freshman righty Nathan Williams has three saves and a 1.64 ERA in nine appearances out of the bullpen.

Today’s game against OSU starts at 6:30 p.m. Miami travels to Ball State for a three-game MAC series this weekend.

Women’s tennis

Miami tops the MAC with a 4-0 record and stands as the only unbeaten squad in conference play.

Sophomore Christiana Raymond is MU’s Female Athlete of the Week after going 4-0 in two matches last weekend. The Westerville native is 15-6 in singles (7-1 at No. 4) and 12-10 in doubles (6-3 with sophomore Nimisha Mohan at No. 3).

The RedHawks (9-9 overall) have won 29 straight regular-season MAC matches. They’ll be at home against Bowling Green on Friday and Western Michigan on Saturday.
