Miami University sports update for Friday, Nov. 22, 2013

MU club football in title game

The Miami University Club Football team will be playing Robert Morris for its third Great Lakes Conference Championship at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at Wright State University in Fairborn Robert Morris. Miami is led by quarterback Cory Farler and Ryan Gannon. Chris Mattress is the main tail back along with Tony Pastiva. Matt Brow heads up a strong offensive line. The defense, which is giving up an average of just 6 points per game, is led by middle linebacker Zak Ogilbee, who averages 10 tackles per game. Maurice Collier and Joe Noble also help anchor the defense. A win will give the club an undefeated season and a chance for the national championship.

Ice hockey

The No. 8 RedHawks were 20 minutes away from a sweep of No. 12 Wisconsin last weekend. Miami took the Nov. 15 series opener in shutout fashion, 2-0, behind 30 Ryan McKay saves. Junior forward Austin Czarnik’s highlight-reel goal put the RedHawks up 2-1 after 40 minutes of play Nov. 16, but Wisconsin scored twice in the third to top Miami 3-2. Head coach Enrico Blasi also announced the signing of defenseman Louie Belpedio and forward Ryan Siroky to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.

Men’s basketball

Miami men’s basketball team signed three players to National Letters of Intent, including two Cincinnati area standouts in guard Zach McCormick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and Roderick Mills (Liberty Township/St.Xavier). The RedHawks also signed forward Logan McLane out of North Carolina. Miami’s home opener against Wilmington is at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23. The game is one of three McFriends and Family Days which is a ticket package that includes four game tickets and four McDonald’s extra value meal vouchers for just $40. Women’s basketball

Coach Cleve Wright announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent, including Kayla Brown (Westfield, Ind./Westfield), Baleigh Reid (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and Ana Richter (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda).

Women’s cross country

Miami finished its 2013 season with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Regional Championship Nov. 15.

Men’s cross country

The RedHawks finished their season by placing 12th out of 31 teams at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov.15.

Field hockey

A cold, windy day and a steady Michigan State offensive attack led the Spartans to a 3-0 victory over Miami on Nov. 13 in the NCAA Tournament play-in game. The RedHawks finish their season at 12-10.

Volleyball

Miami completed its season with a split of its final two matches on the road. The RedHawks dropped a 0-3 decision to Buffalo Nov. 15, but closed the season on a winning note by defeating Akron, 3-1, Nov. 16. Coach Carolyn Condit announced the signing of four players, including Olivia Rusek (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), Maeve McDonald (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), Katie Tomasic (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson) and Courtney Bemis (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb).

Softball

Miami head softball coach announced the signing of Kaitlyn Gliha (Dresden, Ohio/New Albany) to a National Letter of Intent. Gliha will begin play for the RedHawks in 2015.

Baseball

Head coach Danny Hayden announced his first signing class during the early signing period. The RedHawks inked three players to National Letters of Intent in pitchers Gustin Graham and Clay Shourd along with outfielder/pitcher Nick Longo.

Women’s tennis

Miami head tennis coach Anca Dumitrescu announced the signing of Hannah Shteyn (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Erin Rodriguez (Highland Beach, Fla.) to National Letters of Intent.
