Women’s team seniors Liz Steingass, a Miamisburg High School graduate, and Chelsea Girgash will be honored prior to the afternoon match in which the Raiders will face Wisconsin-Green Bay with a chance to earn as high as the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Horizon League tournament.
Later that evening, men’s team seniors Dan Hyman, Michal Lyzwa and Hayden Joblin will get the emotional sendoff, although Hyman’s will be in absentia as he is back in Arizona taking the semester off to be with his recently deceased father.
“Danny won’t be there, but he’s still a big part of us,” McCaffrey said.
The men could be in position to clinch the top seed in the Horizon League tourney if things break right this weekend. WSU needs Green Bay to beat Cleveland State on Saturday and then the Raiders need to beat the Phoenix next Saturday and take their chances on how the tiebreaker scenarios play out.
“Obviously we want to win the regular-season title,” McCafrey said. “The next couple of weeks will be bittersweet. We’re eager to wrap up regular season and start moving on with the conference tournament and see what kind of damage we can do. All the kids are fired up. They love to compete and they’re just getting better and better.”
Award Grant-ed: WSU junior Kacia Grant was named the Horizon League Female Runner of the Week for her performances at the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational.
Grant finished ahead of 22 others to win the 200-meter dash in 25.27 seconds, and she took second out of 26 runners in the 100 (12.33). Grant also was a part of the 400 relay team that finished third and the 400 relay unit that placed fourth.
Her 25.27 time in the 200 is the third-best showing in the Horizon League this season. She also has the third-best time in the 100 with the 12.19 she posted at the South Florida Open on March 13.
Great eight: The Horizon League released its winter All-Academic teams Thursday, and the list includes eight Wright State student-athletes, including swimmer Kile Aukerman, who earned the honor for the second consecutive year.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher and have completed at least one year at the member institution with a minimum of 24 credits.
