Commentary: Movie umpire beats real-life ones in sports world

He was a baseball umpire on the big screen only, but Enrico Pallazzo — err, I mean Lt. Frank Drebin — will forever be my favorite person calling balls and strikes behind the plate.

Drebin, of course, was played by Leslie Nielsen in “The Naked Gun” series. Nielsen passed away Sunday.

With his passing comes the flood of memorable quotes and favorite scenes from his movies on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, including the classic baseball segment featuring a strike-three call complete with a moonwalk and TSA-worthy pat-downs of baseball players in an attempt to find an assassin.

OK, so it’s not reality. But sometimes that’s better than what we actually have.

I’d much rather watch Drebin arguing with fellow umpires and tossing them from the game than see a frustrated LeBron James giving his Miami Heat coach a hard — and what appears to be intentional — shoulder bump or even Buffalo Bills wide receiver Steve Johnson taking to Twitter to blame God for Johnson dropping a touchdown pass.

Given the choice of watching James’ return to Cleveland this Thursday, following Johnston’s Twitter feed or seeing for the umpteenth time Drebin tackling Reggie Jackson to start a bench-clearing brawl, sitting down with some Wong Wu’s Chinese food (they’re back in business?) will always win.
