Dayton, Wright State fall in first round of NCAA volleyball tournament

The Dayton Flyers and Wright State Raiders lost to ranked opponents in straight sets Friday in the first round of the NCAA volleyball tournament in West Lafayette, Ind.

In the first match of the night, Dayton (22-9) lost 3-0 to No. 16 Marquette (28-5). The Golden Eagles won 25-23, 25-19, 25-22.

Jamie Peterson led the Flyers with 11 kills. Alli Papesh had three kills. Olivia Dubay had seven blocks. Bridget Doherty had 15 assists. Maura Collins had nine digs.

The Flyers suffered third straight loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament. They are 7-14 in 14 appearances.

Wright State, making its first NCAA tournament appearance, fell 3-0 to No. 14 Purdue, the host of the matches. The Boilermakers won 25-9, 25-22, 25-11.

Nyssa Baker had seven kills. Lainey Stephenson had 19 assists and eight digs.

Purdue and Marquette will play in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday.
