Erin Andrews had cancer following trial; consulted Urban Meyer

Fox Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews was diagnosed with cervical cancer in September , shortly after she won her trial against a stalker and a hotel.

In an interview with Emily Kaplan of Sports Illustrated, Andrews said she was diagnosed during Week 3 of the NFL season. Throughout the trial and her diagnosis she received advice and encouragement from Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer and his wife Shelley Meyer.

Andrews learned of the diagnosis the same week her fiance Jarret Stoll’s nephew was killed in a car accident. She was told she needed surgery while at a meeting at the New York Giants team facility.

She had two surgical procedures. After the first in October she returned to work two days later and covered a Packers-Cowboys game that Sunday. After the second procedure in November, doctors said she wouldn’t need radiation or chemotherapy afterward.

During the trial and her cancer ordeal Andrews told Kaplan she received support from her broadcasting crew — Troy Aikman and Joe Buck — as well as Urban and Shelley Meyer.

She consulted the Ohio State football coach for advice early in the stalking scandal, worrying about what players would think of her. He texted her after the verdict of the trial, writing “Shelley and I have been thinking about you. Justice served.”

Andrews said she was overwhelmed with the support and well wishes she received from numerous NFL players and coaches following the trial. She said the experience helped her relate better to her job, since she had experienced life on the other end of a story.
