Former Dayton stars begin training camp with Rockets, Pelicans

Former Dayton Flyers star Chris Johnson signed with the Houston Rockets on Monday and will begin training camp with them at the Toyota Center in Houston on Tuesday.

Johnson, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward who scored 1,467 points in his UD career (2008-12), played with the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Summer League.

Last season, Johnson played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA D-League, averaging 13.5 points in 32 games. The Vipers play in Hidalgo, Texas.

Johnson appeared in 147 NBA games between 2013-16 with Memphis, Boston, Philadelphia, Utah and Milwaukee.

A more recent Dayton basketball alum, Charles Cooke, begins training camp Tuesday with the New Orleans Pelicans at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center in Metairie, La. He signed a two-way contract with them in the summer.

Cooke played two seasons at James Madison, sat out the 2014-15 season after transferring to Dayton and played two seasons with Dayton. He finished his college career in March with 1,570 points (957 with the Flyers).
