“Ah yes, 96 yards … the drive,” Fenwick coach John Aregood said after emerging from a spirited postgame talk with his players. “We beat a real good football team. We made some plays when we needed them.”
The loss was brutal for the Rams (4-2, 2-1 GCLC Central), who have now lost to the Falcons five straight times. Badin rallied from a 6-0 halftime deficit to grab a 14-6 fourth-quarter lead, then yielded back-to-back touchdown drives.
“Both teams made plays, but give them credit. They made one more than us at the end,” Badin coach Nick Yordy said. “It came down to Fenwick needing a play and us needing a play, and unfortunately for us they made it.”
Badin took the second-half kickoff and scored in five plays on Davon Starks’ 5-yard run. After a Fenwick fumble, the Rams struck quickly, scoring on 15-yard run by Lavassa Martin.
Midway through the final quarter, Fenwick drove 80 yards in 11 plays, cutting the lead to 14-12 on a Caleb Davis 11-yard run. The conversion pass failed.
Badin marched to the Fenwick 49, but elected to punt on fourth-and-2 with 3:17 left. Yordy took a timeout, but after looking at the mark, thought it better to punt.
“We talked about it,” he said. “The marker was a little longer than 2 yards, and our defense had been playing really well.”
Following the punt, the Falcons took over on their own 4. Janeck completed 6 of 8 passes on the last drive, including a 9-yard completion to R.J. Clesceri on third-and 8.
“We knew it would be a four quarter game,” Yordy said. “We were right there. We just had to make one more play to win. Our defense played great all game. We just needed to take control offensively late.”
Fenwick dominated the first half, holding the Rams to 33 yards and one first down. But the Falcons turned the ball over on the Badin 30 and managed only two field goals by Matt Beckman.
“We should have been up three scores at half, but turnovers and mistakes hurt us again,” Aregood said. “We have been plagued by turnovers the first five games, and it hurt us again tonight.”
Fenwick was led by Janeck’s 151 yards passing. Corbett had 138 yards on 19 carries. The Falcons totaled 192 yards rushing.
Badin was led by Kegen Rogers’ 79 yards rushing. Starks added 60, and Martin was held to 53. The Rams entered the game averaging 327 rushing yards, but Fenwick held Badin to 192.
Both teams are back in action next Friday. The Rams travel to Carroll, while the Falcons host McNicholas.
