“I played with Mo on the Symetra Tour,” the 26-year-old Jandel told a Golf Channel reporter. “I’ve seen her progress, what she’s done out here, and I think it’s awesome. It gives a lot of girls the idea that if she can do it, we can do it.”
Jandel, a 2011 Ohio State graduate, played four years on the Symetra tour. She earned conditional status on the LPGA Tour with her performance in the qualifying tournament last December. She is not eligible for every tournament. Prior to last week, she had played in seven events, making the cut once. She was ranked 609th among the world’s professionals.
Jandel was not in the LPGA Championship field until Michelle Wie dropped out because of an injury. The Oakwood High School product learned Monday that she would make her first appearance in a major championship.
Seitz wins Carroll clash
A couple of Carroll High School graduates squared off last weekend in the final round of the City Men’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship on the Eagle Course at Kittyhawk Golf Center.
Nineteen-year-old Nick Seitz, a sophomore-to-be at Valparaiso University, trailed Paul Day by two strokes going into the final round of the 72-hole competition.
When Day birdied the first hole, Seitz said, “You’re not going to make it easy on me, are you?”
Both players had been denied city titles before. Day, an IT specialist for the City of Dayton, had been runner-up in the city match play tournament three times and finished a close second to Michael Bernard in the 2013 stroke play competition.
Seitz lost a 7 and 6 decision to Bernard in the match play final at Madden Golf Course in June after Bernard had beaten Day in a semifinal match.
Day triple-bogeyed one of the par 3 holes but trailed by just one stroke after 16 holes. Then another par 3 hole spoiled his bid for the title. He put his ball in the water at the 17th and made a double bogey five.
Seitz sank a seven-foot birdie putt for a four-stroke lead en route to a two-under-par 71 and a total of 286. Day finished at 290 after shooting 77.
“It was kind of exciting,” Seitz said a few days ago. “It was fun to finally come out on top. My game feels good going into college (golf).”
Seitz, who averaged 76.89 strokes in 18 rounds as a freshman at Valpo, will be off to school in another week.
“We have (tournaments at) Whistling Straits (in Sheboygan, Wis.) and Firestone (in Akron) on our schedule this year,” he said. “If I can make the starting five, that would be fun.”
Valparaiso also is scheduled to participate in the Dayton Flyers Invitational at NCR Country Club on Oct. 20.
