Welcome to Saturday night.
Winton Woods held Middletown to 213 yards in total offense in dropping the Middies to 1-2 on the season with a 51-13 win.
“They (Winton Woods) wanted the game today,” Everhart said. “It was obvious last night what they wanted. It took us off our schedule and we obliged them. Once you get off schedule it is a crapshoot and tonight we came up craps.”
Winton Woods scored on its first possession before Middletown’s first drive stalled at the Warriors’ 20. Three plays later, it was 14-0. It didn’t get any better as Middletown’s next drive ended with the punt being blocked out of the end zone for a safety and a 16-0 deficit in the first quarter.
It was 23-0 at half, and the Middies had been held to 50 yards in total offense while Winton Woods was running up 282 during a half that turned chippy at moments. Both teams were hit with offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties once, and for the game Winton Woods was flagged seven times for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties to two for the Middies.
“For the first time all year, they lined up the way we expected them too every play,” Everhart said. “They out-executed us, they out-hit us, they out-tackled us, they out-efforted us … our tackling was terrible. The only thing we did better than them was we out-classed them, but they don’t keep track of that on the scoreboard.”
After Winton Woods pushed the lead to 30-0, Jalin Marshall connected with Drey Lewis for a 55-yard gain on a fake punt to take the ball deep into Warrior territory, but the Middies were flagged for an ineligible man downfield. Two plays later, it was 37-0.
Middletown finally got on the board when William Peters returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 44-7 and answered Winton Woods’ last score with a 39-yard scoring pass from Marshall to Peters with 6:18 left.
Winton Woods finished the night with 461 yards of offense, including 407 rushing. Marshall had 77 yards on 24 carries for the Middies, who host Fairfield on Friday night in the home opener.
