Bellbrook’s Bybee leads impressive area state-title haul

The Division II Ohio High School Swimming and Diving Championships were good for Dayton-area competitors.

Very good.

Paced by Bellbrook sophomore Cody Bybee, area swimmers and divers won eight state titles at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Bybee set a state record and won a pair of titles in Friday’s swimming finals. He won the boys’ 200-yard freestyle in a D-II record time of 1 minute, 36.75 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 48.79. Bybee finished third in both events as a freshman.

Xenia Christian junior Eric Knowles also won a pair of titles. Knowles won the 200 individual medley in 1:50.38 and the 500 free in 4:31.26.

Tippecanoe’s Elias Jay Bell, a senior, won the 50 free in 20.82.

Fenwick sophomore Lauren Olson won the girls’ 100 fly in 54.95.

The Division I finals are set for 4 p.m. Saturday.

Diving champs: On Wednesday, Alter senior Claire Schuermann and Piqua junior Isaac Karn won D-II state titles in the one-meter diving competition.

It was the third straight title for Schuermann, whose winning point total was 478.35. Karn, who placed fifth in D-I last year, won with a total of 527.55.
