College Insider: East grad competes on Cincinnati’s golf team

University of Cincinnati junior David Tepe (Lakota East) posted a 2-over par 74 on Sunday and is tied for 23rd place after first-round play at the USF Invitational at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.

Tepe is 12 shots behind tournament leader Jose Joia from Central Florida, who carded a 7-under par 65.

The tournament, which is the first of the spring for the Bearcats, concludes today.

Last year as a sophomore, Tepe finished second on the squad with a 75.2 average over 29 rounds. He placed ninth at the Big East Championships and finished the year with six top-30 finishes.

Women’s basketball

Cedar Crest College senior Lizzy Sunderhaus (Badin) recently was named first team All-Colonial States Athletic Conference, making her the school’s first four-team all-conference player.

Sunderhaus also was voted to the Capital One Acaemic All-America team for Division III women’s basketball.

Men’s tennis

Talawanda High School graduate Matt Sherba is playing No. 1 singles as a sophomore for the University of Charleston’s men’s tennis team this spring.

Sherba was victorious in his most recent outing, beating Centre College’s Ben Newstadt 6-1, 6-0 to lead the Golden Eagles to a 9-0 win.

Last year as a freshman Sherba went 19-4 in singles and 20-3 in doubles and was voted to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s all-league team.

Women’s tennis

University of Cincinnati sophomore Ashley Witte (Lakota West) has won her last three singles matches and four of her last five to even her record to 6-6.

Playing at No. 3 singles for the Bearcats, Witte beat opponents from Connecticut, Pittsburgh and Wright State in straight sets during her current streak.
