“The parents and players at Troy were very loyal and very good people.”
His best player is 6-foot-4 senior Cody Martin, who was good for 20 points in a 79-36 beatdown of host Fairmont. Martin missed all last season while recovering from ACL surgery.
“I can take the pain,” Martin said, “but sitting out a season, that hurt real bad.”
Martin is drawing mid-major attention, “and he’s a better kid than he is a player,” Egan said. “I’m most proud of that.”
FRONT & CENTER: There are only certain times of the year that college coaches can contact prospective recruits, and this isn’t one of them. That’s why many coaches at Flyin’ were dressed in school colors and anchored on or near the front rows.
To them, the more eye-catching the better.
“I was kind of nervous,” Cincinnati Aiken super sophomore Austin Grimes said. “I didn’t know what to think. There were college coaches everywhere.”
Grimes, a 6-3 sophomore transfer guard from Woodward, is being pursued by Wisconsin, Ohio, Cincinnati, Xavier and Akron. He looked forward to a Flyin’ opportunity.
“This was the biggest thing on my schedule,” he said.
MAKE IT COUNT: It pays to have a good Flyin’ showing. Coaches from the following colleges were present on Sunday:
Dayton, Wright State, Marquette, Miami, Butler, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Tulane, Virginia Commonwealth, Wisconsin, Ball State, Wittenberg, Delaware, Xavier, Duquesne, Oakland, St. Francis, IUPUI, Heidelberg, Mt. St. Joseph’s, Ashland, American, Wilmington, Ohio Dominican, Lake Erie, Ohio Northern, Sinclair and Bethune-Cookman.
OUCH: Dublin Coffman (7-2) hit a schedule snag this weekend. The Rocks suffered their first loss to unbeaten Upper Arlington on Friday. UA is led by former Fairmont coach Tim Casey.
Thanks to 27 turnovers, Coffman had no chance in a mismatch with Our Savior New American (N.Y.) on Sunday, losing 80-46.
