HARRISON — Four Middletown Middies placed among the top eight in their weight classes, and a pair of Lebanon Warriors finished in the top three Sunday in the 36-team Glenn Sample Wrestling Classic at Harrison High School.
Sixth-seeded Middletown junior Andrew Globke dominated Elder’s Matt Sandman in the fifth-place match, winning a 13-5 major decision. “I feel like I could’ve done better here,” Globke said. “But now I know that I have to work on some stuff.”
Said Middie coach Shawn Thomas about Globke’s reaction: “Andrew always comes into a tournament like he should be in the finals, but we’ll take fifth place. We’ve just got some things to learn, we’ll be all right.”
Fellow Middie Desmond Hall placed fifth after winning a 6-2 decision over Mount Vernon’s Matt Lybarger at 160 pounds, and teammates Latrell Davis (140) and Ryan Lewis (152) each placed seventh.
Lebanon’s Eddie Noble was on the short end of a 10-2 major decision in the 112-pound final, losing to Princeton’s A.J. Kowal. Warrior teammate Seth Gilbert was the tournament’s sixth seed at 130 pounds, but defeated Badin third-seed Eddie Sanders 6-3 to claim third place.
Lebanon freshman Jonathan Noble finished eighth in the 103-pound weight class.
“I think I’m in better shape and just more physical (than last season),” Gilbert said. “(Sanders) wasn’t going after my legs, so I felt I had to get more physical in order to win.”
Gilbert needed an escape and two reverses in the final period to win.
Moeller won the tourney followed by Elder and Mason. Ross claimed the small school title, finishing 13th overall. Among local schools, Lebanon placed 17th in the big school division, and Middletown was 18th. Edgewood placed eighth in the 10-team small school division.
The lone placer for the Cougars came at 119. That’s where Jordan Puska won by injury default over second-seed Jahday Daniels of Elder to earn fifth.
“I’ll be honest with you. We did not wrestle well at all this weekend,” Edgewood coach Jim Conniff said of his team. “We’ve got a lot of mistakes to work on, but it’s the middle of the season. We’ve got time to fix things.”
Sunday’s tournament may have been a call to work for many wrestlers. Only three of the tournament’s 14 top seeds won their weight classes.
