Those connections came together recently when Cox was inducted into Cumberland’s athletic hall of fame.
Hunn, now a minister in Lebanon, nominated Cox for the honor and served as the master of ceremony.
Huss, who started the cycle, surprised Cox by attending the event.
“It was a great honor to be remembered after 40 years,” Cox said. “Then to have friends, family and former classmates attend the ceremonies made for an unbelievable weekend.”
Cox made the most of his time at Cumberland, which was then a two-year school. He was named the baseball team’s most valuable player, all-conference and Junior College All-American as a sophomore.
The talented outfielder then earned a scholarship to attend Division I Middle Tennessee State University. Cox was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference first team as a senior.
Cox, a 1970 Valley View graduate, became a successful baseball coach at his alma mater, compiling 320 wins in two stints (1986-2003 and 2007-09).
Cox coached basketball for 19 years at the junior varsity, freshmen and middle school levels. He also served as girls golf coach for seven years, boys and girls varsity track coach for five seasons and boys tennis coach for a season.
An English teacher at the high school since 1976, Cox plans to retire this school year.
Vikings standout plays at Bowling Green
Alyssa Carmack, a dominant player in her soccer career at Miamisburg High School, is still a versatile workhorse as she starts her college career at Bowling Green.
The freshman defender is third on the team in minutes played for the Falcons.
“The Bowling Green coaching staff is extremely excited to add Alyssa’s strong defensive style of play, technical skills and tremendous work-rate to the program,” head coach Andy Richards said on the team’s website.
At Miamisburg, the four-year performer was equally adept as a defender and a scorer. Carmack, a two-year captain, compiled 14 goals and 20 assists as a senior and was named player of the year in the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s South Division.
Waynesville standout on Urbana soccer team
Lauren Price, a first-team All-Ohio soccer player at Waynesville High School, now plays at Urbana University.
Price is Waynesville’s career record-holder in assists (76) and is third all-time in goal (96).
Price scored her first collegiate goal in a 2-0 win over Ohio Valley University.
“Lauren is an excellent player and a fierce competitor who can play forward or, if need be, on the wing,” Urbana coach David McCaig said. “She is technically gifted, and I fully expect Lauren to have an immediate impact on the program.”
