High school sports highlights for Tuesday, August 12

Boys Golf

Russ Hogue Tournament: Springfield Shawnee’s Andrew Tincher outdueled three other golfers in a playoff hole to take home individual honors at Cherokee Hills on Tuesday. Four players shot a 75, including Tincher and teammate Grant Engle, Grant Ricketts of Benjamin Logan, and Bellefontaine’s Nathan Langfield. Shawnee won the overall team event with a score of 313, followed closely behind by Bellefontaine (318).

Miamisburg Invitational: Troy won the inaugural tournament at Pipestone Golf Club on Tuesday. The Trojans were led by seniors Dalton Cascaden and Grant Kasler, who scored 75 and 76 respectively. Eaton junior Cameron Willis, the 2012 Division II state champion, took medalist honors shooting a 74.

Cardinal Invitational: Minster finished two shots ahead of St. Marys to win the Cardinal Invitational hosted by New Bremen at Arrowhead Golf Course. Minster’s Matt Trushaw (80) and Austin Brackman (81) finished amongst the top five in individual scoring. Carter Bowman of St. Marys was the medalist, shooting an even-par 72. New Bremen’s Alex Britton was runner-up with a 76.

Mercer County Invitational: Chase Bruns of Fort Recovery led all golfers with an 81 at Mercer County Elks Golf Club. Celina won the team event with a 348, and Fort Recovery was six shots back with a 354.

Champaign County Tournament: West Liberty-Salem cruised to a 44-stroke victory in the Champaign County Tournament held at Woodland Golf Club. The Tigers’ Nick Sims led the way with a 71, which included four straight birdies on the front nine. Teammates Ethan McBean and Kannon Stillings finished with an 81 and 82, respectively. Second place finisher Mechanicsburg was led by Mack Cushman and Caleb Westfall, who each shot an 83. Greg Coffey scored a 90 to lead Urbana, which finished third. Graham’s top finisher was Alex Jenkins with an 85.

Girls Golf

Champaign County Tournament: Mechanicsburg’s Sheena Payne finished atop the leaderboard with a 50 to lead the Indians to the Champaign County Tournament title at Woodland Golf Course. Payne was one stroke better than Triad’s Summer Detrick and Graham’s Makayla Morgan. Urbana finished second and was led by Lucy Buckalew who shot a 54.

Miamisburg 191, Northmont 194: Allison Rang of Miamisburg shot a 42 to lead the Vikings in a dual match at Mound Golf Course. Rebecca Krizner led the Thunderbolts with a 44.

Girls Tennis

Milton-Union 4, Tecumseh 1: Two of the area’s top seniors met up at Milton-Union on Tuesday. In first singles, Tecumseh’s Taylor Culbertson was a straight-set winner over Milton-Union’s Brooke Falb, winning 6-0 and 6-0. The Bulldogs’ Claire Fetters won her second singles match, while Lizzie Fetters and Ashley Wombold teamed up to win at first doubles. Milton-Union won the other two matches by default to start the season 1-0.

Bellbrook 3, Carroll 2: Bellbrook rebounded from an opening season loss to Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame. Carroll won both first and second singles matches. Patriots sophomore Jillian Milano began her trek back to the state tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Rachel Heinz. Bellbrook’s first doubles team (Megan Bias and Hannah Songer) and second doubles team (Caroline Wong and Abby Schultz) were straight-set winners.
