Korb shuts down Fenwick bats, lifts Badin to 5-1 win

MIDDLETOWN — The visiting Badin Rams rode the strong arm of starter David Korb, and a handful of Fenwick errors, to a 5-1 win Thursday on the Falcons’ home field.

“Their pitcher (Fenwick righty Zack Hart) kept us off balance a little bit today,” Badin coach Rick Kunkel said. “But we battled back, ran the bases well and caught a few breaks. But a win’s a win, and Fenwick is always a battle.”

Korb turned in his best outing of the season, striking out 12 batters while scattering five hits and one walk for the complete-game win.

“I was throwing a lot harder than I have in the past, and I was locating my pitches a lot better,” Korb said. “And I’m very confident in the guys behind me. If I don’t make an error (he did, on a botched pick-off move in the fourth inning), I know that I’ve got a great bunch of guys behind me.”

Fenwick coach Bob Sherlock was surprised to hear Korb had recorded just 10 strikeouts in his previous two games.

“Korb did a great job tonight,” Sherlock said. “He had a good fastball and he kept us off-balance with his breaking stuff. In a few other cases, we had some guys who were maybe trying too hard.”

When Fenwick pushed too hard, it led to six errors. Those mistakes led to a pair of Badin runs in the third inning and then three runs in the fifth. The Rams had nine hits for the game, but four of the team’s five runs were unearned.

Badin baserunners also swiped five stolen bases in as many tries.

Fenwick took a 1-0 lead in the first when Chad Goubeaux doubled home lead-off hitter Logan Valentine. Goubeaux was the only Falcons’ batter who solve Korb. He finished 3-for-3, and had two doubles.

T.J. Nichting went 3-for-4 for the Rams. Clean-up hitter Nate Snellgrove went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and had an RBI. Leadoff batter Alex Rieman was the other Ram with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4, swiped a couple bases and scored a run.

Badin (9-1) is scheduled to play at La Salle today. Fenwick (2-6) was originally scheduled to play today at Roger Bacon, but that game has now been moved to April 19th due to a scheduling conflict for the Spartans.
