Jordan Hicks was named one of two defensive players of the year Monday, Nov. 30, when the Division I All-Ohio football team was released.
The Lakota West senior linebacker, who has narrowed his college choices to Ohio State, Texas, USC, Florida and Alabama, was chosen for the honor along with Massillon Washington defensive back Bo Grunder based on recommendations from a statewide media panel. Hicks also will play in the Under Armour All-American game in January.
The D-I offensive player of the year is North Canton Hoover’s Erick Howard, who also was last year’s Mr. Football. Middletown’s Jason Krause shared the D-I coach of the year honors with Springfield’s Rick Robertson and Dublin Coffman’s Mark Crabtree.
Several more of the area’s top players were recognized at the state level. Middletown senior quarterback Caleb Watkins and senior defensive back Jerry Gates were selected to the first team, while Lakota West running back Jordan Thompson was named to the third team.
Lakota West’s Kevin Schloemer, who has committed to Cincinnati, as well as Lakota East’s Pedro Powell and Middletown’s Aaron Lewis received special mention.
Two area players also were recognized in Division II. Talawanda punter Jeremy McClard was named to the third team, and Edgewood senior offensive lineman Taylor Miller, a Toledo recruit, received special mention.
The D-II offensive players of the year were Dominique Brown (Winton Woods), Patrick Angle (Logan) and Devin Clodfelter (Columbus Independence). Defensive players of the year were Joe Ribiero (Mentor Lake Catholic) and Pat Behm (Chagrin Falls Kenston). Coaches of the year were Dick Cromwell (Toledo St. Francis) and Brian Cross (Lewis Center Olentangy Orange).
The All-Ohio teams for Divisions III and IV will be released today. Divisions V and VI will be released Wednesday along with this year’s Mr. Football.
