Homestead to host golf tourney for lefties

Homestead Golf Course near Tipp City will host the 57th annual Ohio Left-Handers Golf Championship July 16-17.

The tournament is open to people of all ages, all ability levels, both male and female, who play the game left-handed. It’s a 36-hole stroke play handicap event with open, senior and masters (over 65) divisions.

David Aldrich of Tipp City, who is running the event, said it drew as many as 140 players in the early 1990s but has had fields of 50-to-70 in recent years.

Doug Moorehead of Hamilton has been the overall winner the last two years. The list of past champions does not appear to have a Dayton golfer on it, but George Grooms of Troy won five times between 1991 and 2000.

Woeste gets 2nd title

Chris Woeste of Centerville won his second straight City Men’s Amateur Match Play Championship on June 19 at Madden Golf Course.

Woeste, a recent University of Dayton graduate, defeated Paul Day, 6 and 4, in a match that was all square after 18 holes. Woeste, who was 2 up after 27, birdied the 10th, 11th and 13th holes to win it.

Last year Woeste defeated Nick Scott, 4 and 3, in the final at Kittyhawk.

Since he established his handicap this year at Weatherwax Golf Course, which is a member of the Greater Cincinnati Golf Association, Woeste also was eligible to compete in the recent Cincinnati Metro Amateur. He won three matches before losing a 2 and 1 decision to veteran amateur Bill Williamson in the quarterfinals.

In Cincinnati, 176 players tried to qualify for the bracket of 64. In Dayton, 16 of the 20 registered players showed up and all made the bracket.

The Dayton Metro, a stroke play event, will have a much better turnout July 28-31 at Sycamore Creek Country Club. It had 92 entries last year.

Weckerling takes 7th

With a 36-hole total of 147, Corey Weckerling of Dayton tied for seventh in the Ohio Junior Championship on June 29 at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna.

Four Dayton area players — Michael Bernard of Huber Heights, Brooks Curry of Franklin, Matt Kern of Springboro and Alec Tahy of Kettering — were among those in a 10-way tie for 10th place. All had 8-over-par scores of 148.

Area golfers miss cut

The Miami Valley’s three representatives did not qualify for match play last week in the National Amateur Public Links tournaments held at Bandon Dunes Resort in Bend, Ore.

Nick Scott of Union (74-81) shot 155 and missed the cut in the men’s championship while Laura Murray of Tipp City (84-81) shot 165 and Jessie Jordan of Urbana (93-81) shot 174 in the women’s competition.

It took a score of 151 to be assured of a spot in the men’s match play bracket, and the women had to shoot 158 to lock up a match play berth.
