At the under-12 media timeout of Dayton’s game against VCU on Wednesday night, the University of Dayton department of athletics recognized the 1966-67 Flyer basketball team for its contributions to the program.
Coached by Don Donoher and led in scoring by Don May, that team went 25-6 and made the Final Four.
After beating North Carolina in a national semifinal, the Flyers lost in the championship game to UCLA and Lew Alcindor (later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar).
Those Flyers' success is credited with helping the department of athletics raise enough money to fund the building of UD Arena, which opened in 1969.
