Shelby Roe is off to a terrific start in her freshmen year of college basketball.

The Madison High School graduate, who was part of the Mohawks’ Division III regional runners-up squad last year, has helped the Ohio Christian Trailblazers to a perfect 10-0 record thus far.

Ohio Christian University is an NCCAA Division II team which is currently ranked fourth in the nation, and a look at Roe’s numbers tells you why. At 15.1 points per game, she ranks 17th nationally in scoring. She’s also eighth in field goal percentage (48.7 percent), fourth in 3-pointers (53.8), seventh in steals (2.9) and 15th in free throw percentage (79.2).

Men’s Basketball

Bill Edwards Jr. (Middletown) has shown plenty of promise as a freshman at Penn State.

Edwards missed the first four games of the season due to a partially torn MCL, but has played well since returning to the floor including a career-high 11 rebounds against Temple last Saturday.

Edwards (6-foot-6, 235 pounds) also ranks fourth in the team in scoring at 7.5 points per game.

Men’s Soccer

Transylvania College junior Kevin Jones (Fenwick) has been selected to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference first team.

Jones, playing as a defender, helped his team to a 16-3-1 record including 11 shutouts and a trip to the NCAA Division III tournament for the second time in three years.

• Sophomore Jake Ruckman (Monroe) had the game-winning assist in overtime that helped Transylvania to a first-round tournament win over Capital.

Football

Mount St. Joseph’s Vincent Smith (Middletown) was recently selected to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference second team.

The senior linebacker recorded 87 tackles this season, second most on the team, as well as four tackles for loss, two interceptions and two sacks.
