A sentimental winner, two big drag racing events and a Help Wanted sign highlight this week in local racing.
Let’s start out in Williamsburg, Ohio. That’s where Middletown driver “Lil’ John” Whitney grabbed the lead some 17 laps into the main feature at Moler Raceway Park and hung on to record his first win of the season.
Whitney was the first late model feature winner at Moler Raceway Park, and he was the track’s first late model champion in 2007.
Before that, John and his father John Sr. both won track championships at Brown County Speedway as drivers for Moler Racing.
Whitney earned a winner’s purse of $1,500 with last Friday’s win in the Sunesis Construction Late Model Division.
Tonight is “Dad’s Night at the Races” at Moler featuring a full slate of racing. The Big Red Book Street Stock Special highlights the evening with a $600-to-win event. Late models, modifieds, Chevettes and a mechanic’s race are also scheduled.
Gates open at the 1/4-mile semi-banked clay oval at 4:30 p.m. with hot laps set to start at 7 p.m. and the first heat races set to begin at 7:45 p.m. Call MRP at (937) 444-6215 for ticket information.
JEG’S Juniors return to Tri-State Dragway
The first of a series of five JEG’S Ohio Junior Dragster Super Series events takes place Sunday at Ross Twp.’s Tri-State Dragway. The JEG’s Super Series pits the state’s top junior dragster pilots, ranging in age from 8-17, against each other at some of the top drag strips in Ohio.
After Sunday’s stop at Tri-State, the JEG’S Series will race next weekend at Edgewater Sports Park in Cleves. Later on this summer, the series will race at Xenia’s Kil-Kare Dragway (July 9), Mt. Vernon’s Pacemaker’s Dragway (Aug. 14) before returning to Tri-State for the final JEG’s Junior Dragster event in September.
Trey Sizemore of Bright, Ind., was the 2010 overall points winner.
Ultimate 64 Shootout
Will yet another area dragster driver waltz on home with the big paycheck from the annual Ultimate 64 Shootout?
We’ll find out this weekend as the sixth annual big-money event takes place this weekend at Edgewater Sports Park in Cleves.
According to early reports, the event purse is expected to be more than $200,000.
In the past five Ultimate 64 events, four of the races were won by Tri-State Dragway regulars Rob Kropfeld of Hamilton, John Cook Jr. of West Chester Twp., Brian Newport of Cincinnati and Franklin’s Steve Royalty.
Tennessee’s Jason Lynch won the event in 2009.
