NFL Draft 2019: Washington Redskins take Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins

The Washington Redskins ended Dwayne Haskins’ wait by taking the Ohio State quarterback with the 15th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

A New Jersey native who played high school football in Maryland, Haskins had expressed hope of being the first quarterback taken this year but had to settle for No. 3 after the Arizona Cardinals picked Kyler Murray of Oklahoma with the No. 1 pick and the New York Giants picked Duke’s Daniel Jones at No. 6.

Haskins is the first Big Ten quarterback drafted in the first round since Kerry Collins of Penn State in 1995 and the first Ohio State quarterback taken in the first round since Art Schlichter in 1984.

Haskins was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and the Quarterback of the Year along with winning the Chicago Tribune Silver Football as the league's most valuable player.

He finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting and set 28 Ohio State records plus seven Big Ten Conference records, including single-season passing yards (4,831), touchdown passes (50) and total offensive yards (4,939).

Along the way, he torched Michigan's top-ranked defense for 396 passing yards and six touchdowns then went for 499 yards and five more touchdowns through the air a week later as the Buckeyes beat Northwestern in the Big Ten championship game.

The last Ohio State quarterback drafted was Cardale Jones, who went to the Bills in the fourth round in 2016.

Haskins is the second Ohio State player taken this year.

The San Francisco 49ers chose defensive end Nick Bosa with the No. 2 pick.
