Oakwood misses shot at another state golf title

The Oakwood High School boys golf team will have to re-tee in its quest for another state championship.

Oakwood was looking for its third straight Division II title and fifth in six years last weekend, but Tyler Kilburn’s team was never in the hunt at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course. The Lumberjacks were 26 shots off the lead after Friday’s opening day and finished fifth behind winner Canton Catholic Central.

“We (had) high confidence and expectations to play well because we knew what we were capable of,” Kilburn said. “It just wasn’t really what we wanted to put up.”

Oakwood’s Andy Mayhew and Connor Quigley each had rounds of 79. Fenwick sophomore Miles Jena was ninth and Valley View senior Andrew Bruns 19th as D-II individuals.

Chaminade Julienne was fourth among D-II girls. The Eagles were led by Ellie Cronin (79-81-160). The junior also was the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed division player of the year. Tippecanoe’s girls were fifth in D-II and were led by Erika Brownlee’s 88-81-166. Kenton Ridge was eighth.

Also, Eaton freshman Sarah Willis was 10th among D-II individual girls and Minster senior Austin Brackman was 33rd in the boys D-III state tourney at NorthStar in Sunbury.
