An odd explanation for the increase in Colin Kaepernick jersey sales

Colin Kaepernick jerseys are selling like hot cakes, but that factoid isn't as surprising as some early reaction to those reports: Some suggested people were buying the 49ers' No. 7 to set on fire.

This was certainly not my first reaction to the news, and upon further review I’m still skeptical. (And it’s essential to point out this is all anecdotal at this point, too.)

Are there really people throwing down $100 to protest a protest they don’t like?

I know wasting money has become a pastime in this country, but that seems a bit extreme.

Of course, this has not been a normal story from the beginning.

It stayed in the news over the weekend as Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem before the 49ers last preseason game, made the team as a backup and got support from US soccer standout Megan Rapinoe.

President Obama also weighed in with his thoughts.

With Kaepernick still a member of the 49ers, his skill set perfectly fitting new coach Chip Kelly’s offense perfectly and the current starter way over his head in the NFL, this story doesn’t figure to fade away anytime soon.
