Ohio Amateur golf: Ohio State recruit takes early lead at Moraine C.C.

Ohio State recruit Maxwell Moldovan leads the 113th Ohio Amateur after the first round Tuesday of the 72-hole event at Moraine Country Club.

Moldovan, a rising senior at Green High School in Uniontown, fired a 3-under-par 68. A two-time state high school champion, he leads Luke Campbell of Whitehouse and Scott Anderson of Columbus by one shot.

Several players, including Centerville grad Austin Sipe, Springfield Shawnee grad Grant Engle and Carroll grad Tyler Goecke, shot 1 under.

Sipe won the 2017 Ohio Am at Springfield Country Club while he still attended Wright State. He is the son of Moraine C.C. head pro Brent Sipe. Engle plays for Ohio State and Goecke will begin his college career at Wright State this fall.

Wittenberg’s Cameron Willis, of Eaton, is one of 14 players who carded an even-par 71.

Play continues through Friday. The field will be cut after 36 holes on Wednesday and again after 54 holes on Thursday.
