Dayton native Tyler Johnson will run for a national championship on Friday night.

The Stivers grad won his heat and finished with the second-best time in the 400 meters on Thursday at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.

He is set to run in the final on at 9:02 p.m. (Eastern) Friday.

Johnson, who won the 400 at the Big Ten indoor and outdoors meets this year, is already a second-team All-American this season thanks to his role in the 4x100 relay team that finished 12th overall Thursday in qualifying.

A sport industry major, Johnson was Ohio State’s top runner at the Big Ten championships this spring and finished as the Big Ten runner-up in the 200, the 400 and as part of the 4×400 relay at the 2020 Big Ten indoor championships.

He was a 2020 All-American after qualifying for the NCAA indoor championships in the 200, 400 and the 4×400 relay.

Coverage of Friday’s finals begins at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
