Bill Peters is old school and proud of it.
“I keep my bowling on soft conditions to a minimum,” Peters said. “There aren’t many people left who think that way.”
Peters’ old-school ways paid off as the 52-year-old West Carrollton resident won the all-events title at the 94th Greater Dayton United States Bowling Congress city tournament. Peters edged Brian Kretzer by two pins, 2,166 to 2,164.
“Going into doubles, I knew I needed a 725 to tie Kretzer,” Peters said. “And he was actually on my pair while I was bowling.”
Peters finished the doubles event with a 727 and captured the all-events title. While he has several first-place city finishes to his credit, the all-events titles are the most coveted.
“In all-events, your first score is the only one that counts so, while you can bowl as many shifts as you want for singles, doubles and team, you can’t make it up in all-events,” he said.
Peters was consistent throughout the city tournament with a 711 in the team event and a 728 in singles. The doubles shot at Poelking Marian Lanes suited his game.
“The scores weren’t through the roof, which was good for me,” he said.
The tougher the shot, the better for Peters, who spent a decade on the PBA Tour from the mid-1970s through the mid-80s. Peters, like many of the area’s top bowlers, competes in the PBA Experience Sport Bowling League at Capri Lanes.
“I don’t like walking into a place where everyone in there hits the pocket every time,” he said. “I think it’s a generational thing. We thought the scores were too high in the early ’80s.”
It was a great way to start the season for Peters, who likely will bowl every stop on the PBA Senior Tour this year.
