Pollard plays key minutes for Dayton Flyers despite sore leg

Dayton junior forward Kendall Pollard left the Robins Center on Tuesday night with enough ice wrapped around his knee to fill a dozen snow cones.

Pollard, playing his second game after missing four with a bruise on his femur, scored eight points and had five rebounds in 28 minutes in an 85-84 victory over Richmond. Those aren’t big numbers, but Dayton coach Archie Miller credited Pollard for the unsung performance of the night.

“Kendall isn’t himself, but he gave everything he had on one leg,” Miller said. “I don’t know what that means moving forward, but if he doesn’t play one minute tonight, we don’t win. He gives people confidence. That’s what we’ve been missing.”

Pollard rested the injury from the 15:26 mark of the second half until the 10:48 mark. The Spiders turned a 48-43 lead into a 59-50 advantage in that span. He said he had to go back in the game because of the deficit. After the game, he said the leg felt good, even though it was wrapped in ice.

“I’ll regroup and get ready to practice tomorrow and be ready to go Saturday,” Pollard said. “At the beginning of the game, I tweaked it a few times. I was good, but I just sat out a few possessions and got back in there.”

Next game: Dayton plays Virginia Commonwealth at 8 p.m. Saturday at UD Arena in the final home game of the regular season. UD will honor seniors Dyshawn Pierre and Bobby Wehrli beforehand.

VCU (21-8, 13-3) shares first place with St. Joseph’s (24-5, 13-3). The Rams host Davidson at 7 p.m. Wednesday in their final home game.

VCU ranks 44th in the RPI. They are still fighting to get into the NCAA Tournament and have two good chances to improve their resume this week. Davidson ranks 66th in the RPI. Dayton ranks 25th.

The Flyers won 59-55 at VCU last season and then lost 71-65 to VCU in the A-10 tournament final. Two years ago, VCU beat Dayton 80-66 in Dayton.

St. Joseph’s plays St. Bonaventure (20-7, 12-4) in Rochester, N.Y., at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Bonnies entered the week tied for third with Dayton.
