• The MSROHIO.com football developmental combine for high school players grades 9-11 will be held at Franklin’s Kingdom Athletic Center on Sunday. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. and testing at 1 p.m. Players will be timed in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone and pro-shuttle, and power ball throw.

• Cleveland State redshirt junior Nick Corba (Beavercreek) split four matches during last week’s NCAA wrestling tournament at St. Louis. Competing at 184 pounds, he lost his opener, then won twice to advance to the second day’s competition. He was pinned by Indiana’s Nathan Jackson, a three-time NCAA qualifier and a returning All-American, in the consolation third round. Corba finished the season 25-10.
• Mikaela Ruef (Beavercreek) has signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. The 6-foot-3 forward, 26, was chosen by the Seattle Storm in the third round of the 2014 WNBA draft following her career at Stanford. She played the last three seasons for the Canberra Capitals in Australia, averaging 12.4 points and 11.0 rebounds this past season. The WNBA season begins in mid-May.
• Travis Trice (Wayne) was named the Australian men’s professional basketball Cairns Taipans MVP, averaging 14.3 points, 3.4 assists and 3.0 rebounds. Trice, 24, has since rejoined the Westchester Knicks of the NBA Development League. A guard, he played collegiately at Michigan State.
• Minnesota Timberwolves forward Adreian Payne (Jefferson) has resumed practicing but hasn’t played since being diagnosed with thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) last month. The 6-10 forward was averaging 4.0 points and 1.7 rebounds in limited playing time before the illness.
• Reader Mike Layer was among the many who correctly pointed out that the Alter girls basketball team isn’t the first in the area to play in four straight state final fours. That was incorrectly reported in this column last week.
Fairmont lost to Toledo Waite in the 2010 D-I state semifinals, then played in three straight state title games against Twinsburg, losing in 2011-12 and winning the D-I state championship in ’13.
The Firebirds’ title team featured senior Chelsea Welch (Wright State) and juniors Kathryn Westbeld (Notre Dame) and Makayla Waterman (Ohio State). Notre Dame will play OSU in the NCAA women’s Midwest Regional Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., on Friday.
