Many of the early mock drafts circulating have former Wayne High School and Ohio State wide receiver Braxton Miller going in the first round, but NFL.com analyst Mike Mayock said that would be a reach.
Speaking on his annual NFL Scouting Combine conference call this afternoon, Mayock said he thinks Miller, a Springfield native, has great potential but is still too raw to warrant a first-round selection.
“Trust me, I love his tape,” Mayock said. “I love what I saw at the Senior Bowl. I really like everything about this kid. But I think the first round is a little bit of a reach. As good as he looked as the Senior Bowl, he’s still very raw running routes. He takes too long getting off press. There’s some things he’s got to learn how to do.
“Having said that,” Mayock continued. “I think the skill set is awesome. He’s probably going to run 4.4. He’s quick, he’s fast, he’s tough, he’s really competitive. I think it’s just a developmental timeline for him to be productive.”
Miller caught 26 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 260 yards and a score in his first season as a wide receiver.
The converted quarterback suffered a season-ending shoulder injury early in the 2014 season and switched positions in 2015.
While Mayock doesn’t view Miller as a first-round pick, he said that the lack of explosive talent at the top end of this year’s receiver class and steep drop off in talent after the top group could lead a team that really covets the position to make a reach.
The on-field workouts for the wide receivers will take place Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
