Bengals sign another CB in wake of injury

CINCINNATI — With the number of injuries at cornerback continuing to mount, the Cincinnati Bengals signed former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back T.J. Heath on Saturday.
First-round draft pick Dre Kirkpatrick has yet to practice with a knee injury suffered prior to the start of training camp, and Adam Jones and rookie Shaun Parter have seen limited action. And Friday the team lost Brandon Ghee for what should be an extended amount of time with a wrist injury.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Ghee had his wrist set and added that he didn’t know if he’ll miss the entire season. Either way, it’s a blow for Ghee, who was having an impressive camp.

"I feel bad for him because finally he had kind of turned the corner where he was getting to a point where he was getting involved in the mix," defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. "He was doing a nice job in covering. He's a good athlete, somebody that's finally worked into it and kind of earned the right to be here and do some of those things."
Heath played in five games for the Jaguars last season, logging two special teams tackles.

“I had heard from a couple of teams and had actually already told my agent I was going to Tampa Bay,” Heath said. “But the Bengals called again, and I changed my mind that fast and I was on a flight within three or four hours.”

The Bengals also have been without Jason Allen the past few days, but Zimmer said he expects him back soon. He also said he isn’t overly worried about the health issues in the secondary.

“I think Kirkpatrick will get back,” he said. “He’s going to be behind, obviously. (Terence) Newman’s done a good job. And we’re being careful with some of the guys. We’ve got (Nate) Clements back. Obviously Leon (Hall) is doing a nice job, and Jason Allen will be back shortly.”

On Friday the Bengals converted wide receiver Taveon Rogers to cornerback, and Saturday the team officially changed his number from 89 to 39.

The only corner who has participated in every practice of training camp is undrafted college free agent Chris Lewis-Harris, who signed July 26, the day before camp began.

Brown scores

Aaron Brown, a fourth-year running back out of Texas Christian, had the highlight of the day in Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage when he broke off a 34-yard touchdown run during a portion of limited live tackling action.

“It was wide open, that’s pretty much it,” Brown said. “I didn’t think it was going to be that wide open, but it was and I pretty much just finished.”

Brown played the previous three years in Detroit, rushing for 45 times for 189 yards while catching 18 passes for 138 yards. He could see more action as Bernard Scott nurses an injury that has his right hand wrapped in a soft cast.
