Bengals Training Camp Diary: Day 4

The wind didn’t come sweeping down the plain Sunday as the Oklahoma drill was shelved by head coach Marvin Lewis. But there was still plenty of contact as the players wore full pads for the first time.

After working on some half-line drills, the team went into its first session of 11-on-11 and mostly ran the ball. The running backs also got in plenty of work on blitz pickup.

The biggest hit on the first day of full contact came from linebacker Vontaze Burfict on running back Cedric Peerman. But to Burfict’s credit, he didn’t plant Peerman. Instead he held him up a bit and tossed him, with Peerman landing on his feet and finishing the run.

First-round cornerback Darqueze Dennard got an extended look for the second day in a row as Dre Kirkpatrick sat out with a hamstring injury and Terence Newman dressed but took most of the day off.

Second-round pick Jeremy Hill got his first taste of contact, and the running back from LSU said he liked it.

Play of the Day: Hill had several nice runs, but on one he followed pulling guard Mike Pollak through the hole, made a nice cut and accelerated through the secondary for a long run.

Quote of the Day: Pretty much everything that came out of the mouth of defensive tackle Devon Still, who talked openly about his 4-year-old daughter Leah's battle with cancer. The third-year defensive tackle from Penn State is still reeling from the June 2 diagnosis, but he's trying to keep everything as normal as possible for his little girl. Asked why he elected to break the news on Instagram, Still said "At first I wasn't going to put it on Instagram, but I felt like we made a decision as a family to go ahead and go public with it. When you have as many people as possible praying for her as a support system and our support system, it is a hard battle to just do alone."

On Tap: Another practice with full pads and contact will run from 3-5 p.m. on the fields west of Paul Brown Stadium. There is a slim chance the team could run the Oklahoma drill that was scrubbed Sunday, but it's not likely.
