Jay Morrison’s NFL Mock Draft 1.0

With the initial wave of free agency finished, along with many of the college pro days, there is a clearer picture of what each team will be focused on in the NFL Draft held April 28-30 in Chicago.

Cincinnati Bengals beat writer Jay Morrison offers his first predictive stab at the selections with Mock Draft 1.0.

1. Tennessee Titans – Jalen Ramsey, CB, Florida State

One would think a left tackle would be a logical pick the year after drafting a franchise quarterback (Marcus Mariota), but none of the previous 10 teams that drafted a QB in the top 10 has taken a tackle with its first pick the following year, including the Titans after taking Jake Locker eighth overall in 2011.

2. Cleveland Browns – Laremy Tunsil, OT, Mississippi

Maybe the Browns still take a quarterback even after signing Robert Griffin III, but taking a dominant tackle who can learn under a consummate pro like Joe Thomas makes more sense … which, of course, is why it probably won’t happen.

3. San Diego Chargers – DeForest Buckner, DE, Oregon

They just watched a team from their division ride a dominant pass rush to a Super Bowl title.

4. Dallas Cowboys – Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State

You can argue how big of a risk Bosa is after a one-game marijuana suspension last year, but what’s not up for debate is Dallas owner Jerry Jones’ willingness to rank physical ability first.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars – Myles Jack, LB, UCLA

The Jaguars continue to stockpile defensive talent with one of the best pure athletes in the draft and one that appears completely recovered from September knee surgery.

6. Baltimore Ravens – Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame

Stanley has the potential to be a dominant left tackle, but he also has the versatility to begin his career at guard if the Ravens can keep Eugene Monroe healthy.

7. San Francisco 49ers – Jared Goff, QB, California

Colin Kaepernick isn’t out of the picture yet, but it looks like it’s only a matter of time.

8. Philadelphia Eagles – Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio State

Coming from Kansas City, new Eagles coach Doug Pederson would love to have another rushing-receiving threat similar to Jamaal Charles.

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers– Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida

The Buccaneers have tons of talent on offense but are severely lacking on defense. Hargreaves will be the first of numerous picks on that side of the ball

10. New York Giants – Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson

There are safer picks given that Dodd only had one year of experience as an every-down player in college, but his upside is too great to ignore, even with the team signing Olivier Vernon in free agency.

11.Chicago Bears – Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State

Jay Cutler is signed through 2020, but Wentz could be just what the Bears need to get out from under Cutler’s ridiculous seven-year, $126 million contract.

12. New Orleans Saints – LaQuon Treadwell, WR, Mississippi

The Saints need a lot of help on the defensive line, but Sean Payton and Drew Brees have always been content with winning games via shootouts.

13. Miami Dolphins – Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson

Exit Olivier Vernon, enter Lawson, who is thicker and stouter than most defensive ends, but that will only make him a perfect complement to Cameron Wake on the other side of the defensive line.

14. Oakland Raiders – Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville

With Khalil Mack on the outside and Rankins inside, the Raiders can mask a lot of deficiencies in the secondary.

15. Los Angeles Rams – Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis

Lynch won’t usher in the new era in L.A., Nick Foles will. But the Rams get their franchise quarterback of the future.

16. Detroit Lions – Jaraan Reed, DT, Alabama

Haloti Ngata didn’t exactly give Detroit the presence it needed on the defensive line after letting Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley walk in free agency last offseason.

17. Atlanta Falcons – Darron Lee, LB, Ohio State

Speed and versatility make him a perfect fit in Dan Quinn’s defensive scheme.

18. Indianapolis Colts – Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan State

The Colts are desperate for help at tackle, and Conklin is the best on the board after Tunsil and Staley.

19. Buffalo Bills – A’Shawn Robinson, DT, Alabama

The Bills need help on the offensive line, but defense always comes first when Rex Ryan is your coach.

20. New York Jets – Leonard Floyd, LB, Georgia

One good edge rusher may be all the Jets need to make a return to the postseason.

21. Washington Redskins – Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor

Billings fills the biggest hole the Redskins have and does so in a safer, more reliable fashion than Robert Nkemdiche and his character issues.

22. Houston Texas – Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor

Back-to-back Baylor Bears go off the board, as well back-to-back targets of the Bengals.

23. Minnesota Vikings – Josh Doctson, WR, TCU

Former Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has already signed a pair of ex-Bengals in free agency, and now he swoops in and plucks a player they would have taken had he been there.

24. Cincinnati Bengals – Noah Spence, DE, Eastern Kentucky

There is no question the most glaring need is at wide receiver, but the Bengals have used the best-player-available model to string together a number of solid drafts that have kept them going to the postseason five years in a row. Given the receivers already off the board, taking one here would be a stretch. And while Spence does have some character questions, his upside is huge.

25. Pittsburgh Steelers – Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State

Hard to imagine the Steelers going in another direction than addressing their woeful secondary, and Apple would be a perfect fit it he falls this far.

26. Seattle Seahawks – Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio State

The Seahawks, who gave up 46 sacks last year, have to find a way to protect Russell Wilson if they want to remain among the league’s elite, and the Butler High School graduate has the ability to step in and start as a rookie.

27. Green Bay Packers – Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama

While the Packers need more help outside, they will be thrilled to see insider linebacker Reggie Ragland, who is a top-15 pick in many mocks, fall to them at 27.

28. Kansas City Chiefs – William Jackson, CB, Houston

He raised eyebrows with his 4.3 40-yard dash at the combine, and cornerback is the top priority for the Chiefs.

29. Arizona Cardinals – Robert Nkemdiche, DT, Mississippi

The success they’ve had in turning another pick with character issues, cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, into a stellar contributor could give the Cardinals reason to believe they can do the same with Nkemdiche, whose talent is off the carts.

30. Carolina Panthers – Vonn Bell, S, Ohio State

Six-year veteran Kurt Coleman, a Northmont High grad who also attended Ohio State, is entering the final year of his contract and the other starter, 10-year vet Roman Harper, is a free agent.

31. Denver Broncos – Chris Jones, DT, Mississippi State

The Broncos need a replacement for Malik Jackson, who bolted for Jacksonville in free agency
