Red Scare adds famous Flyer to roster for The Basketball Tournament

Tournament starts in July at UD Arena

The Dayton Flyers alumni team that will play in The Basketball Tournament this summer at UD Arena added a familiar name to the roster on Friday.

Vee Sanford will play for the Red Scare for the first time since 2019 when the team made its debut in the $1 million winner-takes-all tournament. He joins a roster that includes three other former Flyers who have played for the Red Scare the last two years: Trey Landers; Ryan Mikesell; and Darrell Davis, who also played for the team in 2019.

Sanford started his career at Georgetown and played two seasons at Dayton. He was a senior in 2013-14 when Dayton reached the Elite Eight and hit the game-winning shot against Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. He ranks 83rd in school history with 735 points.

Sanford now plays in Italy for Victoria Libertas Pesaro. He’s averaging 11.0 points per game. He has also played in Iceland, Germany, Colombia and France.

Earlier this month, the Red Scare announced the addition of a non-Flyer to the roster: Joe Thomasson, a Thurgood Marshall graduate who played at Wright State from 2014-16. He now plays for Baxi Manresa in Spain. He’s averaging 11.3 points per game.

The Red Scare will be one of eight teams playing at UD Arena in the first round of the Dayton regional and could play as many as six games in Dayton if it reaches the championship. UD Arena will be a regional site from July 24-27 and will host three quarterfinal games on July 29-30, two semifinals on July 31 and the championship game on Aug. 2. Tickets for all eight sessions of games are on sale.

In all, 13 games in the 64-team event will be played at UD Arena. Seven games were played at the arena last summer, including the championship game, won by the Syracuse alumni team, Boeheim’s Army.

Last year, the Red Scare needed to win three games at Ohio State’s Covelli Center to advance to the quarterfinals of the at UD Arena, but it lost to Category 5, a team of University of Miami alums, in the second round.
